Helicopters use the same four forces as planes, except they are used in mush different ways. "If you give the main rotor wings a slight angle of attack on the shaft and spin the shaft, the wings start to develop lift."(Marshall Brain,2014) This means that if you change the angle of the rotors, you can control whether the helicopters goes up or down. The lever that controls this is called the collective. When pulled up it adjusts the angle of attack lifting it up and when pulled down it adjusts the angle of attack causing the helicopter to go down. Despite this, when a helicopter lifts off the rotors create spin, this is the reason for the tail rotor, it needs to counter the spinning action created from the main rotors and therefore stabilizing it. There are two pedals and these allow you to turn left and right by changing the angle of the tail rotors. If you press the left pedal, the helicopter turns left and if you press the right pedal, it turns right. The joystick used to control the helicopter causing it to go forward/backward/right/left is also called the cycle. The changes the angle of the rotors in a different way than the collection. Therefore the helicopters use the same basic principles except they have to be manipulated in different ways to be able to fly it.
Planes are able to carry a much larger amount of passengers and travel at much faster speeds with much easier controls, but helicopters can do many things that planes cannot. Planes require a large area of flat land for it to be able to land safely and needs a lot of prep time before it takes off. Helicopters are better for intercity transport because it lifts of and lands vertically meaning it doesn`t require much landing space, also meaning that it can be landed on rooftops. Because it doesn`t fly at such insane speeds it makes flying around a city a lot more simple. A leading factor in resulting why helicopters are useful is because they can hover. This is necessary for many emergency services.
This is a short documentary explaining what I just briefly went over.
